Botox Cosmetic® Information

During treatment, very low doses of BOTOX Cosmetic®  are administered via a few tiny injections directly into the muscles that cause those stubborn lines. The treatment is usually done in about 10 minutes, and no recovery time is needed. Within days, you may see an improvement that can last up to 4 months. Results may vary.

How does BOTOX Cosmetic® work?

Those moderate to severe frown lines between your brows form over time as the result of muscle activity. BOTOX Cosmetic® is injected directly into the muscles.  It works by blocking the transmission of nerve impulses to the injected muscles; this reduces the activity of the muscles that cause those persistent lines to form.  It targets what is known as dynamic wrinkles, which are caused by repeated muscular contractions, such as frowning and squinting.  BOTOX Cosmetic®, an injectable treatment derived from a purified protein, works by relaxing the muscles that cause these dynamic winkles, giving your face a more relaxed and refreshed appearance.  Best of all , regular use of this simple treatment will soften expression lines and help to “stop the clock” on the development or further deepening of lines. In addition treatment is so quick and easy that you can often have it done over lunch.

When will I see results from a Botox Cosmetic® treatment?

You can expect to see results within days after your treatment.  The appearance of wrinkles and lines may continue to diminish for up to one week. Results can last for up to 4 months. In clinical trials, nearly 90% of men and women rated the improvement in their appearance as moderate to better 1 month after treatment. Results may vary.

How long does Botox Cosmetic® last?

Results from treatment with Botox® Cosmetic can last for up to 4 months.  After repeat treatments, the effects may begin to last longer. If you discontinue treatment, the frown lines between your brows gradually will look like they did before treatment.

Who should administer Botox Cosmetic®?

Any authorized healthcare professional can administer BOTOX Cosmetic®.  Dr. Murphy has been administering BOTOX Cosmetic® for years.  He uses his knowledge as an Ear Nose and Throat Surgeon to his benefit…having specific knowledge of the musculature of the face he can artistically place the Botox in the appropriate muscle to get the desired affect.  To give a bit more arch to the brow or to erase those frown lines.  Experience is key to superior results.

Is treatment with Botox Cosmetic® painful?

Discomfort is usually minimal and brief. Following a facial analysis by your physician and a discussion on your desired outcome, the procedure itself only takes about 5 to 10 minutes to perform. Many people return directly to work or normal activity following Botox® Cosmetic treatment.

Who should not use Botox Cosmetic®?

BOTOX Cosmetic® should not be used in the presence of infection at the proposed injection site(s) and in individuals with known hypersensitivity to any ingredient in the formulation. Patients with neurological disorders such as ALS, Myasthenia Gravis or Lambert-Eaton syndrome may be at increased risk of serious side effects.

Will I experience any side effects?

The most common side effects include headache, respiratory infection, flu syndrome, temporary eyelid droop, and nausea. Less frequently occurring (<3%) adverse reactions include pain in the face, erythema at the injection site, and muscle weakness. These events are thought to be associated with the injection and occurred within the first week.

Will my facial expressions continue to look natural?

BOTOX Cosmetic® is intended to enhance the way you look not change it.  With the experience of Dr. Murphy’s technique he uses the little is more technique.  Dr. Murphy is able to soften the wrinkles and lines and the patient is left looking refreshed and more relaxed.    Although the results are visible, a treatment with BOTOX Cosmetic® will not radically change your facial appearance or make you look as if you "had work done." The muscle activity that causes frown lines between the brows is simply reduced, so you can still frown or look surprised without the wrinkles and creases between your brows.

What will happen to the frown lines between my brows if I choose not to continue treatments?

If you do not continue treatments, the moderate to severe frown lines between your brows will gradually look like they did before treatment.

Is Botox Cosmetic® affordable?

When considering your facial aesthetic options, BOTOX Cosmetic® is quite affordable. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery's 2003 survey, BOTOX Cosmetic® is one of the least expensive facial aesthetic procedures in the United States. Like other appearance-related investments, such as hair coloring and cuts, teeth whitening, and chemical peels, the cost must be weighed relative to your expectations. Consult your doctor for further information.

Do treatment results differ?

Dr. Murphy has been using BOTOX Cosmetic® in his practice since 2002.  To get the best results, it's important to go to a doctor who is experienced in administering BOTOX Cosmetic®.

Myth#1: BOTOX Cosmetic® is unsafe

FACT:  BOTOX Cosmetic® has a long and well-established safety history.  While you may only know BOTOX Cosmetic® as a wrinkle treatment, it has actually been in use for over 18 years for the effective treatment of a range of medical conditions and is one of the most widely researched medicines in the world. It is reassuring to know that BOTOX Cosmetic® is the most popular physician-administered cosmetic treatment in North America with an estimated 16 million treatments performed since it was first approved.  In addition, it has received a 97% satisfaction rating among users.

Myth #2 BOTOX Cosmetic® will result in the loss of facial expression

FACT:  BOTOX Cosmetic® is intended to enhance the way you look, not change it.  When administered by an experienced physician such as Dr. Murphy, you can still smile, frown and animate.  The treatment only relaxes the muscle beneath the lines at the point of injection, so the other elements of facial expression remain active.  It also has no effect on the sensory nerves, so you will have normal feeling in the treated areas.

Myth #3 BOTOX Cosmetic® is botulism (food poisoning)

FACT:  BOTOX Cosmetic® is not botulism.  It is a purified protein and a finished medical prescription product proven to be very safe through extensive research and testing.

Myth #4:  BOTOX Cosmetic® treatment is painful

FACT: A BOTOX Cosmetic® treatment is quick and simple.  A very fine needle and small amount of liquid is used, so the pain associated with the injection is minimal.  No anesthetic is required, and you can resume normal activities immediately.

Myth #5:  BOTOX Cosmetic® injections can be given anywhere

FACT:  BOTOX Cosmetic® is a technique-sensitive procedure.  Make sure to visit a well-trained physician such as Dr. Murphy for your treatment, and discuss the optimal results you would like to achieve.  BOTOX Cosmetic® should only be administered in appropriate medical settings.

Myth#6:  There are creams that are better than BOTOX Cosmetic®

FACT: there is no scientific evidence that supports that creams work better than BOTOX Cosmetic®.  Creams work well on the surface of the skin BOTOX Cosmetic® works below the surface of the skin to relax the muscles that cause lines and wrinkles to form.

Myth#7:  BOTOX Cosmetic® is a filler

FACT:  Unlike facial fillers such as Restylane, Perlane, Juvederm, Esthelis, Artecol to name a few, BOTOX Cosmetic® doesn’t fill lines or restore volume loss.   It relaxes the muscles underneath the skin that cause the lines. Facial fillers help to fill in facial lines and give back volume that is lost over time.

Myth #8: BOTOX Cosmetic® and BOTOX® are the same

FACT:  Many people may be surprised to know there are two types of BOTOX®:  BOTOX® is used for the treatment of serious medical conditions, while BOTOX Cosmetic® is used in much smaller dosages for the treatment of facial wrinkles and lines.  BOTOX® and BOTOX Cosmetic® should not be confused as they are used to treat different conditions, using very different dosages.
